How to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III

This year, we are celebrating a joyous day in history, as King Charles III takes his place on the throne to be crowned King for his Coronation. The whole of the United Kingdom will be celebrating with champagne, Pimm’s, picnics and even a scone or two! Flags will be decorated in shop windows and across the country, gardens will be adorned in Union Jacks as garden parties, picnics and street parties honour the new King.

This exceptional title deserves a wonderful celebration and what better way to celebrate than the proper British way, with food and fizz of course. Whether you prefer a large gathering or a small gathering, tailor the party to make it absolutely perfect for you. We have everything you need in order to help you have the most memorable day for King Charles’ coronation so let’s start with some inspiration.

History of King Charles III

First, a little bit of history. King Charles III was born on the 14th November 1948. He was the longest serving heir and head of the armed forces. King Charles served in the armed forces himself and joined both the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy. The King is a patron of many charities and whilst he was an heir to the throne, he was an active campaigner for climate change, giving his first speech about the dangerous effects of plastic pollution and global warming at the age of 20 in 1968.

Now, what to include for a banquet fit for a king? Create the ultimate spread of soft spongy sandwiches, a selection of sweet cakes and tasty savoury snacks. Coronation chicken was a dish first served at Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Coronation banquet in 1953. It is a combination of cold cooked chicken meat, herbs and spices in a creamy mayonnaise sauce and tastes perfect in a tea sandwich. Was there ever a more perfect occasion for this tea sandwich filling? Add more of your favourite fillings such as smoked salmon with cream cheese, ham and mustard, egg and cress and of course, let’s not forget traditional cucumber and cream cheese tea sandwiches. Don’t forget to add little Union Jack toothpicks for a charming touch to your spread.

Choose delicious savoury snacks like mini quiches, divine sausage rolls and bag of luxury crisps from Two Farmers Crisps. Two Farmers Crisps are not only absolutely delicious but they are also the first company in the UK to create 100% compostable crisp packets, (so you can indulge without harming the environment). Their hand cooked crisps are fresh, crunchy and absolutely delicious. For patriotic red, white and blue colours, choose the Hereford Bullshot Beef flavour, the Lightly Salted flavour and the Woodland Mushroom and Wild Garlic flavour (a personal favourite of ours).

Complete your banquet with a patriotic pudding and choose from a selection of indulgent scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam or a slice of soft Victoria sponge cake with cream on top. Presentation is everything, so browse our collection of wicker storage baskets to present your sumptuous spread and help you display it beautifully!

Coronation Garden Party Decorations

Now that the food is ready, the next job is to spruce up the garden! Choose from patriotic and charming Coronation bunting to set the scene and add Union Jack flags to rustic wicker plant pots for a royal and patriotic vibe. Why not add a “garden this way” sign for the arrival of your guests and add “garden party” bunting to your freshly potted wicker rattan planters and to the door of your garden. It’s those little touches that make such a difference!

The guests are almost on their way, so it’s time to prepare some drinks. Of course, as this is a very British occasion and it’s summer, Pimm’s must be in order. Fill up a jug full of your own homemade Pimm’s recipe and place it out ready with glasses in a rustic tray on a small table, that your guests may help themselves too. For those who would prefer a glass of fizz, impress your guests with a glass of champagne on arrival from one of our Deluxe Wicker Drinks Baskets. Perfect for keeping champagne bottles cool, this basket is a real showstopper for your Coronation celebration. It comes with 12 glasses and a chilled centre compartment that can hold up to 4 bottles of your favourite fizz.
