How To Clean Your Wicker Basket

Before you begin the cleaning process, it’s important to prepare your basket for a thorough refresh. Start by removing all the items inside the basket—whether it’s blankets, books, or personal items. This will ensure you can clean every part of the basket without any obstruction.

If your basket has a removable lining, be sure to take that out as well. This is a key step, as it allows you to clean both the interior and exterior of the basket more effectively. All of our linings are fully washable, so it’s a great idea to give them a wash every so often to keep them fresh. We recommend including this in your cleaning routine, but only if the lining appears to need a refresh. With your basket empty and lining removed, you’re now ready to start the cleaning process!

Let The Dusting Begin!

Add these quick and easy steps to your regular household cleaning routine to keep your wicker baskets looking their best. Don’t worry about dusting them off every week, once a month or so should be plenty.

  1. Firstly, use as soft-bristled brush to dust off your basket and help loosen any dirt.
  2. Next, use a dry microfibre cloth to wipe over your basket and give it a good general dust.

Cleaning Light Dirt and Stains On Baskets

For wicker baskets with light dirt or stains, a damp microfibre cloth should do the trick.

  1. Take your microfibre cloth and moisten it with warm soapy water, be sure to wring it out well.
  2. Following its natural weave, carefully wipe down your basket. For larger areas such as the bottom of the basket, you may need to refresh your cloth a few times.
  3. Be sure to dry your basket thoroughly before using it again.

Treating Wicker Baskets With Stubborn Stains

For tougher stains on wicker baskets, we always recommend cleaning outside where you can safely ventilate.

  1. Mix a mild solution: Fill a small bucket with warm water and add a few drops of washing up liquid. If you prefer a natural cleaner, white vinegar works well too (1 part vinegar to 3 parts water.)
  2. Dip your microfibre cloth into the solution and wring out well. Wipe down the basket following the weaves direction.
  3. To remove extra stubborn stains, treat the affected area directly with your solution and a tooth brush. This may need to be repeated a few times if your basket is especially dirty.
  4. Once the stain has been removed, wash down with a microfibre cloth and warm soapy water to clean off any excess dirt. Again, this may need to be repeated with a fresh cloth and warm water, depending on the condition of your basket.
  5. Finally, after cleaning your basket with water it is important to give it a good dry off with a clean towel or paper towels to remove any moisture. Make sure it is fully dry before you use it again.

When cleaning, avoid fully submerging your basket in water for long periods of time as this can weaken and warp the fibres, especially as our baskets are made from natural materials. Never use water if your basket has a painted finish, as this may cause the paint to come off.

Tips To Keep Your Wicker Basket Lasting Longer

Now that your wicker basket is clean, here are a few tips to help keep it that way and lasting as long as possible.

  • Regular Dusting: Dust your baskets every few weeks as part of your cleaning routine to help prevent dust build-up. A quick swipe with a dry cloth or soft brush will do to ensure they stay looking perfect!
  • The Occasional Deep Clean: As well as dusting, an occasional deep clean will really benefit your baskets. Simply use a soft brush to dust in harder to reach areas and wipe your basket over with a damp cloth and mild cleaning solution.
  • Use Liners: If you are planning to use your basket to keep items such as dirty laundry or food, we recommend using a liner to protect your basket. All the linings that are provided with our baskets can be removed and washed with ease.
  • Don’t Overload: Be sure to take into account the weight of the items you intend to store in your basket and choose one that suits your needs.
