6 Basic Rules Of Tidying – The KonMari Way

We are huge fans of Marie Kondo here at The Basket Company. We love her spirit, her optimism and of course her life-changing tidying up methods. If you have watched her show on Netflix, you will know that she has 6 basic rules of tidying and how to bid farewell to items (in a way that doesn’t make you feel guilty and makes tidying up enjoyable)

6 basic rules of tidying

Tidying the “KonMari” way will give you a fresh perspective and you will experience uplifting changes. Here are the rules:

1. Commit yourself to tidying

It may seem like a hefty and time-consuming task but if you believe in yourself and you’re ready for change, you can do it and remember the trick is to focus on what you want to keep, not what you want to get rid of.

2. Imagine your ideal lifestyle

Think about the ideal home you want and envision it. What does it look like? Perhaps you’d like to write down some notes or create a Pinterest board named “My ideal lifestyle” to give you some inspiration.

3. Finish discarding first

Don’t just store away without throwing anything out first. This won’t rid clutter and will just diffuse the issue temporarily until more clutter builds up around the storage.

4. Tidy by category, not by location

A common mistake is to tidy room by room. However, this approach isn’t the best way to tidy as you may have shuffled things of the same item around to different rooms in the house. The best thing to do is tidy by category. For example, if you start with the category clothes, you can get all the clothes out of each room and sort through them first, followed by books, papers etc.

5. Follow the right order

Here is the order in which you should tidy: Clothes, Books, Papers, Komono (Japanese for loose odds and ends) and sentimental items.

6. Does it spark joy?

Ask yourself if the item sparks joy. Pay close to attention to how you respond when you touch the item. Do you feel lots of happiness or excitement from the item? If so, keep it. If not thank the item for the happiness it once brought you and say goodbye to it.

Are you ready? Start tidying now and once you have decided what you want to keep, use our wide range of wicker storage baskets here to keep your “joy-sparking” items in order. If you’re not sure where to store what, check our next article “Storage for your joy-sparking items” to help you along the way!
