Featured This Month, November 2020: A Simply Hygge Home

Each month we handpick one talented Instagrammer and their impeccably beautiful home to be featured in our journal and on our Instagram page. We are truly inspired daily by all the talent that we see and just have to share with you. This month we bring you a beautiful hygge home by @simplyscandikatie.

We are all familiar with the famous Danish concept of “hygge” [hoo-guh]

It’s a word that cannot be directly translated however we all experience hygge daily (we just don’t have a name for it). Hygge means appreciating moments of “cosy contentment” whether that’s curling up with a good book in a cosy armchair in front of a roaring log fire or laughter around a candle lit dinner table. The Danes also have impeccable style and taste in interior design and their décor choices are important to them especially during their long, dark winter months, where their homes become a sanctuary to them. We couldn’t think of a better feature for our Instagrammer of the month than the fitting “Simply Scandi Katie”. Katie’s Scandinavian style home is inspired by all things Nordic, which naturally oozes a “hygge” vibe.

Katie has chosen subtle neutral tones as a calming colour palette as the running theme throughout her home, which is a common colour scheme in most Danish households. One of our favourite parts of her home is the gorgeous styling of her fireplace. She has chosen a theme of minimalistic accessories on her shelving to add some character above this convenient and cosy looking log fire storage section. The fresh clean elegance of this room transports us in our minds to a warm, stylish haven with the log fire burning, whilst a harsh Scandinavian winter blows outside.

Katie has used our contemporary Harvest Wicker Log Basket as a unique solution for her logs and kindling.

“My basket looks so perfect next to the fireplace and I love that it has hessian lining to stop all the bits falling through to the carpet”

Candlelight is the epitome of hygge in a Danish household and Katie’s candlelit snug is possibly the cosiest area in her home. To match the minimal colour scheme, she has chosen a slightly darker shade of panelling on the walls, to enhance a cosier atmosphere in this section of her home. By adding a singular lamp and in traditional Danish style, some tall thin candles, she has created a candle-lit haven and a perfect space for ultimate unwinding after a long day. We’d love to spend our evenings in this little nook journaling, reading or simply listening to the pitter patter of the rain with a fresh cup of hot chocolate.

Katie’s kitchen is designed for comfort and on trend elegance. She has chosen traditional Scandinavian style hanging lamps above her island in her kitchen and timber flooring for a rustic, homely feel against the fresh minimal style of her kitchen. For added texture she has placed some chic hessian style rugs and storage baskets to add a little more warmth. The Danes love a touch of warmth and texture in their homes, so Katie has hit the nail on the head with the most beautifully styling.
