As we prepare for the excitement of the arrival of spring, signalling warm and bright days to compliment the majestic display of beautiful, wild blooms, we are thinking about how we can adopt our daily routines, our organisational skills and mental clarity.
When and what is the spring equinox?
This year, the spring equinox takes place on Thursday 20th March 2025. The word “equinox” is derived from Latin and means “equal night”. On the day of an equinox, day and night are of approximately equal length all over the world. It is also akin to a spiritual experience, where new age tribes such as Neo-Pagans, Neo-Druids and Wiccans gather to celebrate new transition.

What herbs are best to plant for spring?
Perhaps celebrate the return of the season by planting seeds in a pot on your window sill. It could be your favourite flowers, or if you prefer to cook with natural ingredients, fill up a rustic wicker planter with seeds to grow fresh, aromatic herbs, which would look so charming in the kitchen. Come to think of it, perhaps you might like to give this as a small gift to a friend. A thoughtful and a perfect gift to mark the shift of the season.

Foraging in spring: Gorse flower jam
One of natures golden sweet treats are gorse flowers, which are abundant during the early side of the year. Not only are they beautiful, covering dark, needly shrubs with bright yellow gems but they are also edible and delicious. Gorse flowers have a very floral, coconut flavour with hints of vanilla. They make the perfect, naturally sweet treat to enjoy throughout winter but they are at their best between March and April. They are ideal for syrups, cordials and jam. Plus, they make a beautiful garnish for salads!
What vegetables are best to harvest in spring?
If you are lucky enough to have a kitchen garden or an allotment, now is the time to harvest some delicious spring vegetables for hearty meals. Grab a wicker trug and harvest chicory, purple sprouting broccoli, cabbage, brussel sprouts and asparagus to create delicious soups and stews for these current chilly evenings.

What can you find in nature during spring?
Explore an array of bright yellow daffodils, smoky blue-purple grape hyacinths and charming crocuses, sprouting up through the soil resulting in the most stunning display of spectacular colour. Keep an eye out for early signs of bluebells that carpet ancient forest floors.
Enjoy a walk in your local woodland or perhaps even wrap up warm for a slow, gentle pootle on your bike. Listen to your surroundings, what do you hear?
